A shellac-based primer that seals the toughest interior stains and odors, from smoke and water to pet, nicotine and tannin, gripping glossy surfaces without sanding and recoating in about 45 minutes. Trade-offs: high VOC and strong fumes need ventilation, cleanup takes denatured alcohol not water, and it is interior and spot-exterior only.

Our verdict
B-I-N (shellac) is the stronger odor and stain sealer with the faster recoat, ideal for smoke, pet odor, and knots, but it has harsh fumes and a short shelf life. KILZ Original (oil) blocks most common household stains well, costs less per gallon, and is a bit easier to work with, though it can yellow and is interior-only. Reach for B-I-N on the worst odors and stains; KILZ Original is the budget interior workhorse for everyday stain blocking.
