Backer board gives thinset a stable, moisture-tolerant surface so floor and wall tile bond for good, but the category now spans three very different products. Traditional cement and fiber-cement boards are cheap and proven, a polyiso foam board is fully waterproof and light enough to cut with a knife, and an uncoupling membrane skips the board entirely to isolate cracks.
